"OMG 2" Review: Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi Deliver Laughs

OMG 2 Movie Review: After a considerable time, I've relished an Akshay Kumar performance as profoundly as this rendition. Moreover, seldom have I encountered such an unexpected delight as I did with OMG 2, and it truly was a splendid surprise.

In the 2012 original "OMG," Paresh Rawal portrayed a witty 'naastik' (atheist) with such fervor that Krishna Vasudev Yadav from Gokul felt compelled to descend to Earth to enlighten him about his ways. In this process, the movie took swipes at caste and creed while exposing the manipulations of 'paakhandis' across various religions, preying on the unsuspecting. One of the main characters daringly mentioned the Gita, Bible, and Quran in the same breath. Essentially, the first OMG, led by Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, fearlessly satirized religious hypocrisies, evoking hearty laughter, even as the resolute skeptic Kanji Lal Mehta discovered his own spirituality.

OMG 2 Movie Trailer:

Approaching "OMG 2," I harbored considerable apprehension. After all, this is 2023, a different era in India, marked by heightened polarization. Could a film delicately scrutinize religion and religious figures without turning didactic, sanctimonious, or biased? The sequel skillfully sidesteps the complex issue of diversity by presenting an astonishingly progressive, open-minded perspective that temporarily shifts our focus from the absence of other faiths. Instead, it crafts a riveting narrative that challenges the lack of faith many uninformed adults place in our youth as they explore the intricacies of their bodies with natural curiosity and candor. The film staunchly asserts that there is nothing 'gandaa kaam' (dirty) or inherently wrong, and certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Additionally, the sequel astutely chooses to portray its lead character, Kanti Sharan Mudgal, as an unwavering Shiva devotee, and Pankaj Tripathi adeptly embodies this role. Kanti's faith is pushed to its limits when his adolescent son becomes the target of bullying and harassment from classmates and betrayal from teachers for engaging in what they label 'vulgar acts.' The courtroom, presided over by Judge Purushottam Nagar (Malhotra, concealing smiles throughout the proceedings), becomes Kanti's battleground as he defends his son. Enter the formidable Kamini Maheshwari (Yami Gautam), the combative lady lawyer representing the accused school principal along with an array of snake oil peddlers and charlatans.

In a landscape fraught with social sensitivities, "OMG 2" navigates the complexities of religious dynamics with a nuanced touch, delivering a thought-provoking and engaging film.
