Judge Denies Alex Murdaugh’s Request for a New Murder Trial

A judge decided not to give Alex Murdaugh a new trial on Monday.

Alex, a former lawyer from South Carolina, was convicted of killing his wife and son. He wanted a new trial, claiming that a court clerk, Rebecca Hill, influenced the jurors wrongly.

The judge acknowledged that Rebecca made some silly comments during the trial, but said they were brief and didn't impact the jury's decision in March 2023.

So, the judge didn't agree that Alex had enough reason to redo the trial or overturn his conviction and life sentence.

Even though the judge didn't grant a new trial, she criticized the court clerk, Rebecca Hill.

The judge, Jean Toal, said Rebecca was attracted to the idea of being famous and wanted Alex to be found guilty because she thought it would help her sell a book about the trial.

The judge also mentioned that Rebecca wasn't entirely believable when she testified in court in Columbia, South Carolina, on Monday.
