Vaazhai review:
This is not your typical Tamil film – it will make you laugh, cry, and, most importantly, provoke deep thought. *Vaazhai*, a rural drama directed by Mari Selvaraj, draws inspiration from true events. Selvaraj is known for crafting stories that resonate with his personal beliefs and values, and this latest film is no exception. Rooted in his own life experiences, *Vaazhai* intertwines elements of life, hope, dreams, and fate, while also confronting the harsh realities that come with them.

Vaazhai story
Sivanaindhan (Ponvel) and his best friend Sekar (Raghul) are students at the government school in Karunkalam village. Sivanaindhan’s infatuation with his teacher, Poonkodi (Nikhila Vimal), soon lands him in trouble. One day, when Poonkodi drops her pink and white handkerchief, Sivanaindhan quickly picks it up and hides it in his pocket. Later, in class, he takes a deep breath of the hanky and starts imagining himself as Rajinikanth, with Poonkodi playing the role of Radha from *Rajathi Radha*, whom he falls in love with at first sight. Sivanaindhan is a huge Rajini fan, while Sekar is a Kamal fan, and the two often argue playfully about their respective idols.
At home, Sivanaindhan lives with his mother and sister, Vembu, and spends his weekends helping them pluck bananas in the plantations to make ends meet. However, Sivanaindhan despises working on the plantations and often comes up with excuses to avoid the hard labor. He finds an unlikely ally in Poonkodi, who, rather than punishing him for his lies, forgives him.
Meanwhile, in the village, workers like Kani (Kalaiyarasan), who helps load banana stalks onto trucks, become the voice of the people as they fight against a dishonest trader who pays them a meager wage. The situation escalates when Kani demands fairer wages, leading to a tense standoff. The story unfolds as Sivanaindhan grapples with his responsibilities at home and his affection for Poonkodi. Will he continue helping his mother on the plantation, or will the events in the village alter his path?

The themes of Vaazhai
Writer and director Mari Selvaraj’s body of work is so compelling that each film he creates feels like a piece of art that goes beyond the silver screen. In *Vaazhai* (Banana), he tells a simple yet profound story through the eyes of a child, though it’s far from a children’s film. The character of Sivanenjam embodies the innocence, joy, and happiness that children often carry, even in the face of poverty and a harsh life. Yet, the struggles he endures reverberate throughout the entire community. At the same time, the film beautifully portrays love, care, and the vibrant splendor of nature.
Selvaraj deftly interweaves themes of caste, capitalism, exploitation, and oppression into the narrative, doing so in a way that feels both powerful and subtle. This balance is what makes the film so striking. *Vaazhai* is a heart-wrenching yet heartwarming experience—an extraordinary achievement for any director.
